Castle in Ghent, Belgium

This blog is a special study for the grandkids. It is important for both boys and girls to have a good understanding of a "Castle". Sometimes you want to build a castle with blocks or legos. Other times it is really important to be able to draw the castle of your dreams. To help you better understand how to build or draw a castle, we went to Ghent in Belgium to take these pictures so that you can study a proper castle. Here is what this castle looks like.
It is surrounded by a pond--that is called a moat. The high walls have turrets where you can see if anyone is coming.
You will need daggers and knifes.
Some nice pointy swords are useful for protection.
This is a crossbow. It is sort of like an ancient gun, except that it shoots arrow-like things called a bolt.
All of your soldiers will need a proper suit of armor.
Somewhere in the castle you will need a giant fireplace. Here you can properly heat the hall for your victory feast.
You will also need dark passageways leading up and down.
Sometimes you need a strong wooden door.
Every good castle has peep holes that you can look out of to see what those guys are doing.
On the top you should be able to see all over the city. Here is grandpa smiling up at you. Notice the notched wall that protects you as you spy out.
Sadly, this is the real thing. They used this to take care of the enemy.
Of course, every castle needs a king. Here is the great King David on the throne. Not bad. You will need your own.
Here grandpa and grandma Madsen are inspecting the double stone walls that protect the castle.
A lot of people did not realize that every good castle has a bathroom.
On top of the towers of your castle you will need to have your own special flag.
 Inner walls are important too!
Secret doorways leading to passageways hide your movements.
Make your castle strong. Stone is better than wood. It will not burn in a fire.
The small building on the side can be used for your own house. You can watch the fight from your bedroom window.
Proper castle towers have a pointed roof. This will scare the enemy.
You will need lots and lots of rocks to build all the walls you need for proper protection.
Tall, strong walls of stone are best. Have fun building your castles!
